Australian born, New York based singer-songwriter Philip Foxman continues to deliver music brimming with innovative sounds and songs on his second solo CD entitled "Up Antenna", combining classic acoustic guitar driven pop-songwriting with gritty electronic tones and grooves, amped-up with textural electric guitars, tempered by violins and mandolins resulting in a heartfelt sophisticated-pop sound reminiscent of David Gray, Neil Finn and U2.
Foxman's storytelling abilities are well showcased here with his socially incisive and intimate lyrics sung in an earthy-vulnerable manner, which can't help but draws the listener into his world of city-wise characters
The single You'll Never find sets tone of the CD with an intense and sparsely recorded emotional plea from the heart from a man who's resolved to trying to rebuild his life. The chorus to this song will follow you around for days.
Arms around the Sun is a fine example of modern progressive pop-folk tune with all its multi-part genre fusion, crammed into 3.36 minutes while lyrically finds favor in a someone's ability to bring out the best in others by their sheer lust for life.
The CD shifts gears with the atmospheric and beautifully crafted song Heaven in your eyes. While the blend of violins/mandolins and hip-hop grooves on Bad Day guides the listener almost voyeuristically into the life of an Internet dating, self-medicated, single 30's something women who "just can't get off her love lost self destructive treadmill".
The sparse and pensive bass guitar riff driven Until it's gone is a dark and beautiful song that dwells outside the gloss of pop music and comes across as a cynical valentine to life in the naked city.
The sweeping rush of dreamy strings on We belong, brings texture and liveliness to this moderately paced song, while the vocal performance is both emotional and inward looking within its own sphere of affection and resignation.
Following on the heels of his critically acclaimed CD "West 4th and Charles" which fused shades of countrified -rock tunes with dark story telling on "Up Antenna" Foxman and his band have stretched out incorporating atmospheric tones, flourishes of electronica to their acoustic rock, creating a broader more universal sound.
"Up Antenna" is a cohesive and compelling listen to a singer-songwriter who's not afraid to expose those unspoken emotional scars of our hyped-up caffeine driven- spiritually seeking society.
